In February 2012, the African Union Commission, through the Peace and Security Department (PSD), initiated the Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration Capacity Program (DDRCP) in consultation with the Regional Economic Communities (RECs) and Regional Mechanisms for Conflict Prevention, Management and Resolution (RMs). The purpose of the DDRCP is to strengthen capacities within the AU to work with its Member States and regional partners, to strengthen national and regional DDR initiatives on the continent by providing technical, logistical and political support.

One component of the DDRCP Project Document is the creation of a Compendium of DDR experiences in Africa. This includes the collation and synthesis of documents on DDR, an exploration of key issues and lessons learned by political and security context, against a number of thematic areas and grouped by country. The Compendium can be navigated through the use of the buttons and menus highlighted at the top of the screen. In addition to this all the documents on which this Compendium is based can be accessed either through the individual links or via the ‘All documents’ menu. This provides a list of all documents with the content of each summarised and also gives the user the option of viewing and printing individual documents or generating lists of groups of documents that may be of particular interest. User defined searches by key words (e.g. by author or date of publication) are also possible from the ‘All documents’ section.

The role and practice of DDR is changing in response to new realities and the complexity of conflict situations which require responses. An important part of the Compendium will be the development of a series of case studies exploring key emerging issues where there is a need for further exploration and analysis. These will reflect current programming contexts, challenges and opportunities across the five different African regions.

Additional documents for inclusion in the Compendium are welcomed. If you have a document that you think would be of value please submit it using the link at the bottom of the page.
